Ravi read and re-read the last sentence. Welcome to your new life. A new life. Was that a good thing? Did it depend entirely on the life that came before? The life Ravi had no hope of remembering thanks to the chip installed in his brain.

He had read the statement at least fifty times already, each time triggering new thoughts about who he once was. Even so, his eyes scanned over it once more as his right hand fisted and unfisted of its own accord, halfway through the word ‘your’ when the wall exploded, jumping toward him.

Leaping to his feet, Ravi found himself in a combat stance. A person emerged through the dust that had once been a recycled plastic wall. Deep brown eyes raked over Ravi: Examining, assessing.

"Petite," they called over their shoulder. "This is the wrong room." Flicking their head back to face Ravi disturbed their choppy pale hair so it fell into their eyes.

Their sturdy black boots picked their way over the pile of plastic that used to be a wall as they tugged at the collar of the white jacket that could so easily be mistaken for a medical uniform. They turned their full attention back on Ravi where he stood frozen in his combat stance.

They offered a dangerous smile. "Okay, Re-An. I have to move fast so you have two options: you come with me, or I punch you out – and by punch I mean flip the switch that sets you to standby mode so you need rebooting."

Have you seen @thedisabilitybookarchive cos they archive lists of books with disability rep and you can search by genre.

Also two of my sci-fi books have disability rep in them.

Ravi from Welcome To Humanity is one of the three protagonists and has an entire prosthetic arm and leg and stuff and it's not exactly the most functional.

But I think Matter from Unlicensed Delivery suits this desire too, they're one of the five pov characters and the first one we start with. On page one, Matter is complaining about IPA standardised chairs and how bad they are for their chronic illness. They have a flare day on page, have a complex relationship with the ship's CMO, and their chronic illness impacts the climax of the novel.

I wish there was more representation of disabilities and chronic illness in fantasy, science fiction and action genres.

Not just a side character with 30 seconds of screentime. An important character that doesn't just exist to further the storylines of other characters. I want a character that doesn't get "cured" or healed. A character that stays disabled and/or chronically ill. A character that isn't afraid to ask for help. One that doesn't think they're a burden and doesn't try to hide their disability/ chronic illness.

I want to see how it affects them, not just know they're disabled/chronically ill and it jist never gets mentioned again. I don't mean it should be their entire personality but being disabled and or chronically ill can affect many parts of life.

I just wish there was more representation of disabilities and chronic illness that shows every part of it. Especially in fantasy and science fiction it's lacking.

Right, considering the current state of corporate politics on this site, and that it seems that only those affected seem to be actively speaking on the matter, this needs to be dragged out to a wider audience.

This extends to refusing to believe in bogus call-out posts for frankly minuscule thinks such as being horny or kinky, especially if the target is presenting in an ‘unconventional’ manner, (therians, etc.) this double standard where it is seen as ‘degenerate’ for transfemmes to merely exist in certain spaces, yet everyone else is fine to do so is disgusting and part of the reason for the backlash.

Exactly.

The sheer volume of people who say to me "well, this dystopia is bad because it's just what [minority group] faces every day but now it's [majority group]". Like congrats, you somehow both hit the point and absolutely missed it.

That's on purpose.

Did I pull the dehumanisation of cyborgs and Re-Ans in Welcome To Humanity out of thin air? No. It's based on life as a twice-disabled and trans person, it's based on my friends talking about the way they face racism, it's based on my friend's experience working in holocaust education.

Any decent dystopia functions on the foundation of observation and anger. The ones that don't work, by and large, don't have that anger behind them or they're not commentating on something they've observed.
